A chilling double murder has rocked Amchua village in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, where the bodies of 71-year-old Sona Baskey and her 20-year-old granddaughter, Sona Murmu, were discovered in their home on the night of Friday, September 19, 2025. The gruesome incident, reported under the Shikaripara police station jurisdiction, has left the close-knit tribal community in shock as authorities scramble to uncover the motive and identify the perpetrator.
The victims were found by Raju Soren, Murmu’s husband, who resides at his in-laws’ home. Soren told police he had left the house around 2 PM to play football in a nearby field and returned at approximately 6 PM to find his wife and grandmother-in-law dead. “I was gone for a few hours, and when I came back, I saw them lying in blood,” Soren recounted, visibly distraught. The couple, married for nearly two years, lived with their six-month-old daughter, who was found unharmed in the house—a puzzling detail that has intensified the mystery surrounding the crime.
Amit Kumar Lakra, officer-in-charge of Shikaripara police station, described the scene as indicative of a violent attack. “Prima facie, it appears to be a murder committed with a blunt weapon or a stick. The victims sustained severe injuries, primarily to the head and torso. Surprisingly, Sona Murmu’s six-month-old daughter, who was in the same room, was left untouched,” Lakra said. The infant, found crying near her mother’s body, was immediately placed in the care of relatives.
The bodies were sent to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka for post-mortem examinations, with preliminary findings suggesting blunt force trauma as the cause of death. Full autopsy results, expected within 48 hours, are anticipated to provide critical insights into the nature of the attack.
To aid the investigation, a team from the Jharkhand State Forensic Science Laboratory has been deployed to collect fingerprints, DNA evidence, and other trace materials from the crime scene. “We are conducting a thorough sweep of the house and surrounding areas, interviewing neighbors, and analyzing any available CCTV footage from nearby roads,” Lakra added.
“They were good people, with no enemies that we know of,” said Rani Tudu, a neighbor. The absence of any apparent motive has led police to explore possibilities including robbery, personal vendettas, or even a targeted attack.
Raju Soren has been questioned extensively, but police have not named him a suspect, as his alibi is being corroborated by teammates from the football game. “We are keeping all possibilities open, but his account aligns with initial witness statements,” Lakra noted. The investigation has spurred unease in Amchua, with villagers demanding swift justice. “This kind of violence is rare here. We want answers,” said local resident Anil Marandi.
Dumka’s Superintendent of Police visited the crime scene on Saturday morning, directing an expedited probe. Additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain order and reassure the community. As forensic analysis continues and police pursue leads, the unharmed infant remains a poignant symbol of the tragedy’s complexity, urging authorities to unravel the truth behind this brutal act.
