In a tragic incident in Kasigawan village, Kanpur district, a 35-year-old man, Rajaram, was arrested for allegedly killing his 80-year-old mother, Rajeshwari, after she refused to give him Rs 40 to buy liquor.
The shocking crime, reported on Sunday, September 7, 2025, has highlighted the devastating impact of alcohol addiction. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Panki) Shikhar, the incident followed a heated argument when Rajeshwari denied Rajaram’s demand for money. In an attempt to avoid confrontation, she locked herself in a room.
Enraged, Rajaram broke open the door using bricks, dragged her out, and allegedly struck her on the head, causing her immediate death. Station House Officer Kushalpal Singh of Sen Paschimpara Police Station confirmed Rajaram’s alcohol addiction, noting it as a key factor in the attack.

Neighbors initially mistook the commotion for a routine family dispute and did not intervene. However, when Rajaram attempted to flee, locals apprehended him and handed him over to the police. Rajeshwari had been living with her son since her husband, Tulsiram Yadav, passed away 15 years ago.
The police have sent Rajeshwari’s body for a post-mortem examination, and forensic teams are collecting evidence from the crime scene to build a case against Rajaram. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, raising concerns about the growing issue of substance abuse and its tragic consequences.
This case echoes similar incidents across India, including a 2023 case in Chhattisgarh where a man killed his mother over a liquor money dispute, underscoring the need for addressing addiction-related violence. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities ensuring strict action against the accused.
