A cloudburst triggered flash floods in Maadi village, Poni tehsil of Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district early Monday, sending panic through the mountainous region. The incident, which occurred around 3:00 AM, caused torrents of water to surge into the village, forcing residents to flee their homes with their children to higher ground. Despite the chaos, officials confirmed no casualties or property damage were reported, offering relief to the affected tribal community.
A local villager described hearing a “huge sound like a blast” before floodwaters inundated homes, highlighting the sudden and terrifying nature of the event. Police promptly arrived to assess the situation, ensuring no immediate losses were recorded. The flash floods left behind a significant mudslide and debris, blocking roads in the area. The Public Works Department deployed personnel and machinery to clear the obstructions, restoring access to the village.
Cloudbursts, characterized by intense, localized rainfall, are increasingly common in Jammu and Kashmir’s hilly regions, often linked to shifting weather patterns. Reasi, located in the Pir Panjal range, has faced similar events in recent years, raising concerns about infrastructure resilience. Authorities remain vigilant, with no further incidents reported as of Monday evening.
