At least three people were injured after a bomb explosion struck a rally organised by the student-led National Citizen Party on Monday night. NCP convener and Dhaka-11 MP Nahid Islam was present at the venue when the explosion occurred, along with several other senior party leaders who were on stage during the gathering.
The explosion occurred at around 9:45 pm at the Eidgah Ground near Savar Thana Stand, where the NCP was holding a rally following a march. Party officials said the blast took place while Dhaka District NCP Convener Nabila Tasnid was addressing the gathering. The injured were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment, while their identities were not immediately confirmed.
Arifur Rahman Tuhin, joint chief coordinator of the NCP, confirmed that the party’s July March in Savar had come under attack and that at least three people were injured. NCP central member Yassir Arafat also said the explosion occurred during the rally. The circumstances surrounding the blast and those responsible for it were not immediately known.

Nahid Islam, who serves as the NCP convener and Opposition chief whip, was on stage at the time of the explosion. NCP Member Secretary and MP Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organiser for the Northern Region Sarjis Alam and other central leaders were also present. Nahid was one of the prominent faces of the student-led uprising that reshaped Bangladesh’s political landscape in 2024.
The NCP launched its July March on Monday as part of a month-long programme marking the second anniversary of the July Movement. The movement began in 2024 as a student protest against a controversial quota system in government jobs before expanding into a wider uprising against the government of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The 2024 protests intensified following a violent crackdown, internet restrictions and nationwide unrest, eventually forcing Hasina to resign and leave the country. The newly formed NCP emerged from the student-led political movement that followed. Monday’s explosion at its anniversary rally has now raised fresh security concerns, while further details about the attack and the investigation are awaited.
