West Bengal Police arrested Deshraj Singh, the prime accused in the brutal murder of student Ishita Mallick, near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest, executed in the early hours in Nautanwa town, Maharajganj district, came a week after the shocking crime in Krishnanagar, Nadia district, where Deshraj allegedly shot his girlfriend dead at her Palpara home on August 25, 2025, after she attempted to end their relationship.
A senior officer from Krishnanagar Police District told PTI that Deshraj was apprehended while attempting to flee to Nepal in a vehicle, following a lead obtained from his maternal uncle, Kuldeep Singh, arrested a day earlier in Jamnagar, Gujarat. “Kuldeep helped Deshraj escape and provided fake documents to conceal his identity,” the officer revealed. The investigation gained momentum after Ishita’s family, despite their grief, cooperated with police, providing critical details that led to the suspect’s location.
Three specialized teams from Krishnanagar were deployed across Uttar Pradesh, suspecting Deshraj was hiding in one of his secret hideouts, supported by his family, including two gangster brothers-in-law, and influential contacts. After evading capture for days, Deshraj was brought to Krishnanagar Kotwali police station on transit remand for further interrogation. Meanwhile, his father, Raghavendra Pratap Singh, has been placed under house arrest in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and will soon face questioning in Krishnanagar.
