A shocking incident of violence unfolded at Srinagar airport on July 26, 2025, when an army officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly launched a “murderous assault” on four SpiceJet employees over a luggage dispute, leaving them with severe injuries, including a spinal fracture and jaw injuries. The budget carrier detailed the incident in a statement, noting that the officer’s aggression erupted after being informed that his 16 kg of cabin luggage—exceeding the 7 kg limit—required an additional fee.
According to SpiceJet, the officer, a passenger on flight SG-386 to Delhi, refused to pay and attempted to forcibly enter the aerobridge, breaching security protocols. Escorted back to the gate by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, he became increasingly violent, punching, kicking, and attacking staff with a queue stand. One employee collapsed unconscious, yet the officer continued the assault, while another staff member suffered a bleeding nose and mouth. The injured employees were rushed to a hospital for treatment of their grievous injuries.
Footage captured the officer charging at staff with an object, relentlessly attacking until CISF personnel intervened, ensuring no disruption to flight operations. SpiceJet has filed an FIR with local police, submitted the footage, and initiated steps to place the officer on its no-fly list. The airline also notified the Civil Aviation Ministry, demanding strict action, and condemned the violence, vowing to pursue legal and regulatory measures.

The Indian Army has acknowledged the incident and is cooperating with the civil investigation. The CISF confirmed its prompt intervention and is taking necessary action. Under Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) rules, the officer’s actions classify as Level 2 (physical abuse) or potentially Level 3 (life-threatening behavior), carrying penalties of a six-month or up to two-year flight ban, respectively. The incident has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability and enhanced safety measures for airline staff.
