In a chilling incident that has rattled South Goa, two men, Rafiq Tashan, 24, and Yuvkesh Singh, 20, were injured after a group of unidentified assailants opened fire on their car and physically assaulted them in the Mungul locality near Margao town.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, sending shockwaves through the usually peaceful region. According to Superintendent of Police (South) Tikam Singh Varma, the assailants, numbering six to seven, ambushed the vehicle, firing shots to force it to stop before attacking the occupants. The victims were rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji, where they are receiving treatment for their injuries.
The incident unfolded around 2 a.m., when the group of assailants targeted the car carrying three men, including Tashan and Singh, as it traveled through the quiet Mungul area. Police reports indicate that the attackers fired at the vehicle from behind, causing it to halt, before launching a brutal physical assault on the two men. The third occupant escaped unharmed, though details about his role or condition remain undisclosed.
Authorities have launched an extensive search operation to apprehend the suspects, deploying teams to comb the area and analyze potential CCTV footage. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with police exploring possibilities such as personal enmity, gang-related violence, or a targeted criminal act.
This brazen attack has raised serious concerns about rising crime in South Goa, a region known for its tourism and relative tranquility. Local residents and business owners in Margao have expressed alarm, urging authorities to enhance security measures and expedite the investigation.
The police are investigating the backgrounds of the victims to determine if the attack was premeditated or linked to prior disputes, while also examining forensic evidence, including bullet casings recovered from the scene. As the community awaits answers, this incident underscores the need for stronger law enforcement presence to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in Goa’s coastal districts.
