Kolkata Police arrested Gautam Halder, a Border Security Force (BSF) constable who had been absconding for over a year, for allegedly defrauding a woman of Rs 29 lakh. Halder, a resident of Tehatta in Nadia district, West Bengal, was apprehended while working under a false identity as a manager at a sweet shop in Buroshibtala, Behala, according to a senior police officer.
Halder, previously posted at the BSF office in Rajarhat, met the victim at an event in Gariahat. He cultivated a romantic relationship with her, promising a shared future and convincing her to invest in a petrol pump. The woman handed over Rs 29 lakh as an advance, only for Halder to vanish and cut off all communication.
The case was complicated by Halder’s disappearance, as he had switched off his phone and assumed a new identity. Kolkata Police traced him by analyzing his old call records and identifying contacts he reached out to using a new number. This led them to the sweet shop where he was nabbed during a raid.
