SpaceX has reportedly begun turning away satellite operators seeking dedicated launches on its Falcon 9 rocket beyond 2028, signaling a major strategic shift toward its next-generation Starship launch system. According to people familiar with the matter, the company has also stopped producing some non-reusable Falcon hardware, including the rocket's upper stage. The reported move reflects Elon Musk's long-term vision of making Starship the primary vehicle for commercial, government, and deep-space missions, although the company has not officially announced a retirement date for the Falcon family.
Sources also said SpaceX is currently not accepting future reservations for its Falcon 9 rideshare program, which allows multiple satellite operators to share a single launch and reduce costs. However, the plans remain subject to change depending on Starship's development progress. People familiar with the matter noted that Falcon 9 missions could continue for key government customers such as NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense if required. SpaceX, NASA, and the Pentagon had not responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
SpaceX has previously stated that it intends to eventually transition from Falcon 9 to Starship but has not disclosed a specific timeline. If the reported schedule remains unchanged, the company would need to overcome significant technical and operational challenges within the next few years to make Starship fully capable of handling commercial launch demand.
