President Droupadi Murmu stressed on Friday that while smart blackboards and modern facilities matter in education, "smart teachers" are paramount for student development. Speaking at the National Teachers Awards ceremony in New Delhi, where she honoured over 60 educators for their outstanding contributions, Murmu drew from her own teaching experience, calling it a "meaningful period" of her life.
"Smart teachers understand students' needs, make studies engaging with affection and sensitivity, and instill dignity and security," she said. Emphasising character-building as a teacher's primary duty, Murmu noted that sensitive, responsible students following moral conduct surpass those focused solely on competition or bookish knowledge. "Affectionate teachers empower even the poorest children to soar, and their greatest reward is students' lifelong remembrance and societal contributions," she added.
Aligning with the National Education Policy's goal of making India a global knowledge superpower, Murmu urged teachers to excel in school, higher education, and skill education. The awardees were recognised for innovative pedagogy, inspiring first-generation learners, and enhancing outcomes in challenging settings.
