Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has said that the state is set to emerge as a major player in India’s gold production sector, following developments around a new gold mining project in the Kurnool region. His remarks highlight the government’s broader push to position Andhra Pradesh as a key hub for mineral resources and industrial investment.
According to the Chief Minister, the upcoming gold mining operations in Kurnool could significantly increase domestic gold output, with projections suggesting that a substantial share of India’s production may come from the state in the future. He indicated that the project, once fully operational, has the potential to reduce India’s dependence on gold imports and strengthen local resource utilisation.
The announcement comes in connection with the Jonnagiri gold mining project in Kurnool district, which is being developed as one of India’s first private gold mining initiatives. The project has been described as a major milestone for the mining sector, involving significant investment and expected to begin commercial operations in the near term. Officials have also noted that the region has been identified as mineral-rich through geological surveys.

Naidu has linked the development of such projects to a wider economic strategy aimed at boosting industrial growth in Andhra Pradesh. The state government has been actively promoting mining, manufacturing, and infrastructure investments, positioning mineral development as a key driver of employment generation and revenue expansion. Similar initiatives have been highlighted as part of efforts to attract both domestic and international investors.
The Chief Minister also emphasized that increasing local gold production could help reduce the country’s large-scale dependence on imports, which currently account for a major share of India’s gold supply. By expanding domestic output, the government aims to ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves while also strengthening India’s mining ecosystem.
Overall, the statement reflects Andhra Pradesh’s ambition to become a significant contributor to India’s mineral economy, with gold mining emerging as a strategic focus area alongside broader industrial and infrastructure development plans across the state.
