Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gurpreet Singh Gopi was shot dead after armed assailants allegedly chased the motorcycle he was travelling on and opened fire in Mamdot town of Punjab's Ferozepur district, police said on Saturday. Gopi was travelling with a man identified as Harpreet when the attackers, who were reportedly in a car, pursued them and fired at the motorcycle. The incident has triggered a police investigation, with authorities examining a longstanding dispute between the two sides as a possible motive. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, Gopi and Harpreet were riding the motorcycle when the attackers began following them in a car.
The assailants allegedly opened fire while pursuing the two men, resulting in Gopi sustaining fatal injuries. Harpreet was also present during the attack, while police have begun collecting information about the sequence of events and the identities of those involved. Police said the attack was not an isolated confrontation and may have stemmed from an old dispute between the two parties. An election-related dispute has also emerged as a key angle in the investigation. Authorities are examining the background of the individuals involved and the circumstances that may have led to the shooting.
Investigators are expected to establish whether the previous dispute directly led to the attack and determine the specific role played by each accused. The incident reportedly unfolded as Gopi and Harpreet were travelling through Mamdot on their motorcycle. Some of their friends were following them in a separate car. Police said the attackers also opened fire at that vehicle during the incident. The additional firing has become part of the investigation as officers work to reconstruct the movements of the victims and the attackers before, during and after the shooting.

SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said police had identified the alleged attackers and formed teams to track them down. “The two parties had an old dispute. The attackers have been identified and our teams have been formed. We will arrest them as soon as possible,” he said. Police teams are conducting efforts to locate and arrest the suspects, while investigators are also working to gather evidence related to the shooting. The killing of the AAP leader comes amid heightened scrutiny of violent incidents involving political workers and local disputes in Punjab.
While police have identified the old dispute and election-related tensions as important lines of inquiry, the investigation will determine the precise circumstances and motive behind Gopi's murder. Authorities are continuing to question those who may have witnessed the incident and examine available evidence as efforts to apprehend the accused continue. Police have maintained that the suspects will be arrested as soon as possible. The investigation remains focused on establishing the complete sequence of events, identifying the exact circumstances surrounding the firing and determining the reasons for the attack. Further details are expected to emerge as the police teams pursuing the accused make progress in the case.
