Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the historic Kamakhya Temple on Tuesday, offering prayers at the revered Shakti Shrine shortly after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The two senior leaders arrived at the temple complex located atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, where they participated in traditional rituals and sought blessings of Goddess Kamakhya. The visit came after the high-profile oath-taking event held at the Khanapara playground earlier in the day, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several other top leaders of the NDA.
Security was significantly tightened around the temple premises during the visit, with large crowds of devotees and visitors gathering to witness the arrival of the dignitaries. Temple priests conducted customary ceremonies in accordance with established traditions and formally welcomed the leaders as part of the ritual proceedings.

The Kamakhya Temple is among the most significant Shakti Peethas in India and holds deep spiritual importance in Hinduism, particularly within Tantric traditions. Dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, a manifestation of Shakti, the temple is regarded as a powerful symbol of feminine divinity and spiritual energy. Situated overlooking the Brahmaputra River, it is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in the northeastern region.
The temple attracts large numbers of devotees from across India and abroad throughout the year, with the annual Ambubachi Mela being its most important religious gathering. The festival, which celebrates the mythological menstruation cycle of the goddess, is considered one of the largest spiritual congregations in Assam and draws pilgrims, ascetics, and tourists in large numbers.
The visit by Rajnath Singh and Yogi Adityanath took place on a day of significant political activity in Assam, following the oath-taking of Himanta Biswa Sarma as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. The BJP-led NDA government has returned to power in the state for a third straight term, marking a continued period of political stability and reinforcing the alliance’s strong presence in the region.
