The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust has introduced an app-based darshan system to streamline pilgrim management and enhance the overall experience for visitors at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of India’s most prominent religious sites. The new digital system will initially apply to specific services such as Sugam Darshan, Rudrabhishek, and special aartis, which require prior booking.

Devotees opting for these services will need to register through the designated mobile application by providing basic identification details, including Aadhaar information. Temple authorities said the initiative is aimed at reducing congestion, improving scheduling, and ensuring smoother access for pilgrims, particularly during peak seasons when footfall surges significantly.

Officials explained that the app will also help categorise visitors based on language and region, enabling the administration to deploy volunteers and staff accordingly. This targeted approach is expected to ease communication barriers often faced by devotees travelling from different parts of India and abroad. By assigning assistance based on linguistic needs, the trust hopes to create a more inclusive and organised environment within the temple premises.

Importantly, the temple trust clarified that the traditional free darshan system will remain unaffected. Devotees who do not wish to use the app can continue to visit the temple through the regular queue system. Additionally, local residents, commonly referred to as Kashiwasis, will retain access privileges during designated hours without requiring prior digital registration, preserving long-standing customs associated with the temple.

Beyond convenience, authorities highlighted the security advantages of the new system. The collection of limited visitor data is expected to help maintain better records and strengthen monitoring within the temple complex. Officials emphasised that the data will be handled with strict safeguards and stored only for a limited duration, addressing concerns related to privacy and misuse of personal information.

The rollout of the app-based darshan system is being implemented in phases, allowing the administration to gather feedback and fine-tune its features over time. The move aligns with broader efforts to modernise pilgrimage infrastructure in Varanasi, a city that draws millions of visitors annually. By integrating technology with traditional practices, the temple trust aims to balance heritage with efficiency, ensuring a more seamless and secure experience for devotees while preserving the spiritual essence of the site.
