As loving pet parents, we often share our meals with our furry friends, but some common household ingredients can be harmful—even deadly—for dogs. Here are five everyday foods found in Indian kitchens that should never be given to your canine companion, along with safer alternatives.
1. Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant that dogs cannot metabolize efficiently. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, seizures, and in severe cases, fatal poisoning.
Instead, try give your pup dog-friendly treats or small portions of fruits like bananas and apples without seeds or the core.
2. Onions and Garlic
Allium vegetables, including onions, garlic, leeks, and chives, can damage a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anaemia. Even a small amount, whether raw, cooked, or powdered, is dangerous.
Instead of seasoning dog food with onions or garlic, opt for pet-safe herbs like basil or parsley in moderation.
3. Dairy Products
Many dogs are lactose intolerant, meaning dairy products like milk, paneer, or ice cream can cause digestive distress, including bloating, diarrhoea, and gas. If your dog loves creamy textures, try lactose-free dog yogurt or mashed pumpkin without additives such as sugar, salt, fat or spices.
4. Grapes and Raisins
Even a single grape or raisin can cause kidney failure in dogs. The exact toxin is unknown, but ingestion can lead to vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Opt for safer fruits like watermelon without seeds and the rind or blueberries.
5. Tea, Coffee or Caffeine in General
Caffeine in tea, coffee, and energy drinks can lead to rapid heart rate, hyperactivity, and seizures in dogs. Even a few sips can be dangerous. Fresh, clean water is always the best beverage for your pet.
By being mindful of what we feed our dogs, we can ensure their safety and well-being. Always check with a vet before introducing new foods into their diet!
