Filmmaker Kunal Kohli has urged Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to extend the state’s ongoing food safety inspections to household kitchens. Kohli made the suggestion through an Instagram story, pointing out that many homes may have expired food products stored away in kitchen shelves and refrigerators. His post encouraged people to examine their own food supplies and discard items that have remained unused for long periods.

Kohli said households can sometimes have old bottles, packets and other food products that are carefully cleaned and returned to shelves without being checked for their expiry dates. He suggested that such items could remain stored for years despite never being consumed. The filmmaker’s message was framed as a broader reminder about food safety and the need for consumers to take responsibility for checking the products kept in their homes.

The filmmaker also encouraged social media users to carry out their own inspection rather than waiting for authorities to visit. He suggested that people conduct a “Tukaram Munde cleaning” of their kitchen shelves and refrigerators. The comment came amid growing public attention around food safety inspections being carried out by the Maharashtra FDA across the state.

The department has been conducting checks at restaurants, hotels, roadside eateries and other establishments involved in preparing or selling food. Inspections have also covered businesses supplying food through online delivery platforms. Authorities have taken action against establishments found violating food safety rules, including issuing improvement notices and suspending licences in some cases.

The ongoing enforcement drive covers several food safety concerns, including adulterated products, unsafe food served at eateries and junk food sold around schools. Authorities have also been monitoring the manufacture and sale of banned gutka and tobacco-containing pan masala. Kohli’s post brings the focus beyond commercial establishments and highlights the possibility of expired or forgotten products remaining inside ordinary household kitchens.

Kunal Kohli is known for directing films centred on romance and relationships. He made his directorial debut with Mujhse Dosti Karoge! in 2002 and later directed films including Hum Tum and Fanaa. His other directorial projects include Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Teri Meri Kahaani, Next Enti?, Lahore Confidential and Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story.
