Frequent heartburn, often dismissed as a minor post-meal discomfort, may in fact be linked to certain everyday foods that can aggravate acid reflux, according to health experts. The condition typically presents as a burning sensation in the chest after eating and can persist for hours, affecting daily comfort and digestion.
According to gastroenterologist and liver specialist Dr Saurabh Sethi, who is trained at Harvard and Stanford, several commonly consumed foods and beverages may unintentionally worsen heartburn symptoms. He notes that many people are unaware that routine dietary choices could be contributing to recurring acid reflux episodes.
Dr Sethi explains that highly acidic foods such as tomatoes and tomato-based products can trigger increased acid production in the stomach. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons may also irritate the digestive tract due to their natural acidity. In addition, spicy foods are known to aggravate symptoms in individuals prone to reflux. Even chocolate, which contains caffeine-like compounds, may relax the lower esophageal sphincter and allow stomach acid to rise more easily.

Interestingly, he adds that even mint tea—often considered soothing—can worsen symptoms in some individuals by relaxing digestive muscles and promoting reflux. These findings highlight how certain widely accepted “healthy” or neutral foods may not be suitable for everyone with sensitive digestion or acid-related issues.
On the other hand, Dr Sethi points out several foods that may help ease symptoms. Oatmeal can help absorb excess stomach acid, while ginger is known for its calming effect on the digestive system. Slightly green bananas, melons, and cucumbers are also considered gentle on the stomach and may reduce irritation associated with heartburn.
Medical references, including reports from the National Library of Medicine, note that frequent heartburn may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic condition affecting the stomach and esophagus. Doctors advise that lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and medications are often the first line of treatment, while surgery may be considered in severe or persistent cases that do not respond to conventional therapy.
