The Telugu film industry is reeling from the loss of veteran actor Venkat Raj, popularly known as Fish Venkat, who passed away on Friday at a private hospital in Hyderabad due to kidney failure. He was 53. Known for his infectious Telangana accent and versatile performances in comedy and villainous roles, Fish Venkat leaves behind a legacy spanning over 100 films.
Venkat had been battling severe kidney issues for nine months, undergoing regular dialysis and, more recently, ventilator support after his condition worsened. Despite medical efforts, the absence of a suitable kidney donor and the high cost of a transplant—estimated at ₹50 lakh—proved insurmountable. His daughter, Sravanthi, had made a public plea for financial aid, revealing the family’s economic struggles. While actors like Pawan Kalyan (₹2 lakh) and Vishwak Sen, along with a Telangana minister, offered support, a false claim of aid from Prabhas’ team added to the family’s challenges.
Born in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and raised in Hyderabad, Venkat Raj, nicknamed “Fish” for his fisherman-like Telangana dialect, debuted in 2000 with Sammakka Sarakka under director Dasari Narayana Rao. His roles in hits like Kushi, Aadi, Bunny, Adhurs, Gabbar Singh, and DJ Tillu earned him widespread acclaim. Recent appearances included Slum Dog Husband, Narakasura, and Coffee with a Killer.
