Veteran Bengali actress Basanti Chatterjee passed away at her residence in Kolkata on Tuesday night, her family confirmed. She was 88 and had been battling cancer for an extended period, compounded by other age-related health issues. After spending months in the Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU) of a local hospital, medical professionals advised home care under nursing supervision, according to a spokesperson from the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum.
Chatterjee’s illustrious career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on Bengali cinema, television, and theater. She appeared in more than 100 films, including acclaimed titles such as Thagini, Manjari Opera, and Alo, earning praise for her versatile performances. Her television roles in popular serials like Bhutu, Boron, and Durga Durgeshari made her a household name. Her final appearance was in the serial Gita LLB, where she continued to work despite her deteriorating health.
Starting her journey in theater, Chatterjee was a prominent stage actress in her early years before transitioning to film and television. Her dedication to her craft persisted even as she faced significant health challenges, including a kidney failure and a pacemaker implant. Actor Bhaswar Chatterjee, who worked with her in multiple projects, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Her physical pain was immense, yet her passion for acting remained unmatched.” He highlighted her irreplaceable talent, noting that her contributions inspired generations.

The Bengali entertainment industry mourns her loss, with colleagues and fans paying tribute to her legacy. Chatterjee’s body remains at her Dum Dum residence, awaiting her daughter’s arrival for the final rites, as per the Artists’ Forum. Her work continues to resonate, cementing her as a beloved figure in Bengali culture.
