Thalapathy Vijay's much-anticipated political action thriller Jana Nayagan, marking his final cinematic venture before a full-time political career, has encountered significant obstacles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, directed by H Vinoth, remains without a censor certificate days ahead of its scheduled January 9, 2026, theatrical release, prompting the producers to approach the Madras High Court for urgent intervention.
Reports indicate that the CBFC suggested minor cuts and dialogue modifications after screening the film in mid-December. Although the makers complied and resubmitted the revised version, the certificate has not been issued, leading to allegations of deliberate delay from Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Party leaders have publicly criticized the process, suggesting political motivations behind the hold-up.
The absence of certification has stalled advance bookings in Tamil Nadu, affecting both Jana Nayagan and the competing Pongal release Parasakthi starring Sivakarthikeyan. While bookings have commenced in overseas markets, Kerala, and Karnataka with strong early response, exhibitors in the home state remain cautious to avoid potential scheduling disruptions.

Jana Nayagan features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, and Prakash Raj, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The trailer, released earlier, showcased high-octane action and political themes, heightening expectations for Vijay's swansong performance.
Amid rising tensions, fan rivalries surfaced during the trailer launch when supporters reportedly tore down posters of Parasakthi in Madurai, underscoring the intense competition during the festive Pongal weekend. As the court hearing progresses, the industry awaits resolution to ensure the film's timely arrival in cinemas.
