Actor Dhanush has expressed admiration for tennis legend Rafael Nadal after watching the recently released Netflix documentary Rafa, saying the film gave him a deeper understanding of the physical and emotional challenges the Spaniard endured throughout his career. Sharing his thoughts on social media, Dhanush clarified that his comments were not part of any promotional campaign but stemmed from his long-standing admiration for Nadal. The actor described himself as a fan who had spent more than half his life following the former world No. 1’s matches and achievements on the tennis court.
Reflecting on the documentary, Dhanush admitted that he had often reacted emotionally while watching Nadal compete, particularly during difficult matches and defeats. He said that, like many passionate supporters, he would sometimes become frustrated when the tennis star lost crucial points, sets, or matches, believing that Nadal could have performed better. However, the documentary changed his perspective by revealing the extent of the physical pain, stress, anxiety, and sacrifices that accompanied Nadal’s illustrious career. Dhanush wrote that learning about the challenges faced by the Spanish icon left him overwhelmed and made him regret the occasions when he had criticised Nadal’s performances from the comfort of his home.
In his message, the actor recalled shouting at the television during matches and wondering why Nadal made things difficult for himself. After watching the documentary, he said he realised that fans often see only the results on the court and not the immense personal struggles athletes endure behind the scenes in order to compete at the highest level. Nadal, widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in history, built a career defined by resilience, determination, and an ability to overcome injuries.

It explores the mental and physical demands of elite sport and provides insight into the pressure faced by one of tennis’s most celebrated figures. Dhanush’s heartfelt response resonated with many fans online, with social media users praising the actor for his honesty and empathy.
Several commenters noted that the documentary serves as a reminder that even the most accomplished athletes carry burdens that are often invisible to the public. The actor’s post also highlighted the deep connection that sports stars can forge with supporters across the world. By sharing his own experience as a fan, Dhanush underscored how documentaries like Rafa can offer a more nuanced understanding of the people behind sporting greatness, beyond the victories and defeats that define their public careers.
