The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court in the ongoing Jana Nayagan case, urging the apex court to hear its arguments before passing any orders. The development follows KVN Productions’ appeal challenging a Madras High Court order that temporarily stayed the implementation of a single judge’s directive to grant the film a UA certificate.
The producers approached the Supreme Court after the Madras High Court division bench intervened, halting the earlier single judge order. The bench issued the stay after the CBFC requested an urgent hearing on the same day the initial directive was delivered, citing concerns about certain content in the film.
Directed by H. Vinoth and starring actor and TVK party founder Vijay, Jana Nayagan was scheduled for release on January 9. However, the stay on the certificate now leaves the release in limbo until the legal matter is resolved. The uncertainty has heightened anticipation among fans and industry insiders alike.

The CBFC has raised specific concerns regarding the use of emblems linked to the armed forces in the film, arguing that these require examination by subject experts before any certification can be granted. By filing the caveat in the Supreme Court, the board has sought to safeguard its right to be heard in the matter before any interim or final relief is granted to the filmmakers.
KVN Productions, through producer Venkat K Narayana, had publicly stated that Vijay deserves a proper cinematic farewell after more than three decades in the industry. While the production house has actively sought legal recourse, Vijay himself has not issued any public comments regarding the ongoing certification dispute.
As the case now moves to the Supreme Court, industry observers are closely watching whether the board’s objections over military insignia and procedural compliance will delay the much-anticipated film further, or if the apex court will clear the path for its release in the coming weeks.
