The makers of the Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay, have approached the Supreme Court seeking relief against the Madras High Court’s order that temporarily stayed the issuance of a UA certificate. The plea was filed on January 12, 2026, the same day Vijay arrived in Delhi to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the tragic Karur stampede during a TVK rally on September 27, 2025, which claimed 41 lives.
Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled for theatrical release on January 9, 2026. A single judge of the Madras High Court had earlier directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant the film a UA certificate. The film, promoted as Vijay’s final cinematic outing before his full transition to politics, faced objections from the Censor Board, which argued that certain emblems related to the armed forces required expert examination.
Following the single judge’s directive, the CBFC appealed against the order and secured an urgent hearing. During proceedings on January 9, the Madras High Court imposed a temporary stay on the earlier direction, effectively halting the issuance of the UA certificate until the matter is fully adjudicated. This development has delayed the film’s release and intensified the legal battle surrounding its certification.

The producers moved the Supreme Court shortly after KVN Productions head Venkat K. Narayana released a video statement defending the film and asserting that Vijay deserves a fitting farewell after more than three decades in the industry. The statement marked the banner’s first public explanation amid the ongoing controversy over the certification process. The makers are now seeking an expeditious resolution to enable the film’s release without further hindrance.
Actor Vijay has so far refrained from making any public comments on the Censor Board and court dispute concerning Jana Nayagan. The case has drawn significant attention due to its timing, coinciding with Vijay’s political activities and the CBI probe into the Karur incident, while highlighting the complex intersection of cinema, certification norms, and legal oversight in the Tamil film industry.
