Actress Ameesha Patel has shared details of an unusual family story involving former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her parents’ wedding. Speaking about her family’s political background, Ameesha explained that her grandfather, Barrister Rajni Patel, had a close association with Indira Gandhi, which led to her involvement in deciding the wedding date of her parents. According to Ameesha, the marriage could not be scheduled through traditional horoscope matching, as her parents’ kundalis did not align, which led the family to seek an alternative arrangement.
Ameesha said that in this situation, her grandfather approached Indira Gandhi and asked her when she would be available to suggest a suitable date. She claimed that Indira Gandhi simply provided a date based on her own schedule, and that day was then finalised for the wedding ceremony. The marriage reportedly took place at the prestigious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in South Mumbai, marking what Ameesha described as a unique blend of personal tradition and political influence.
The actress further highlighted that her grandfather, Rajni Patel, was a prominent lawyer and political figure who maintained close ties with Indira Gandhi during her tenure. She said he played an advisory role and was actively involved in political discussions and decision-making within the Congress party. Ameesha also mentioned that his influence extended beyond politics, including contributions to public institutions such as the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai, which she said was built as a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru.
Ameesha also recalled that Indira Gandhi had a personal connection with her family even beyond political ties, stating that the former prime minister was among the first notable visitors after her birth at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She described these incidents as part of a long-standing relationship between her family and the Gandhi household, which she believes has continued to remain an important part of her family’s legacy over the years.
