Even before its theatrical release, Shraddha Kapoor's upcoming film Eetha has found itself at the centre of a controversy over its title. While the teaser has drawn praise for Kapoor's transformation into legendary Lavani performer Vithabai Narayangaonkar, objections have emerged over the decision to name the biographical film Eetha instead of using the iconic folk artist's name. The Maharashtra unit of the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Film and Cultural Department, along with members of Vithabai's family, has urged the filmmakers to rename the project to better reflect the life and legacy of the celebrated performer.
The controversy gained momentum after the NCP's Film and Cultural Department formally wrote to director Laxman Utekar and production house Maddock Films, requesting that the title be changed to either Vitha or Vithabai. Babasaheb Patil, Maharashtra State President of the department, argued that a biopic based on the life of Vithabai Narayangaonkar should prominently feature her name in its title to preserve her identity and honour her contribution to Maharashtra's folk culture.
Members of Vithabai Narayangaonkar's family have also supported the demand, clarifying that they are not opposed to the making of the film itself. Instead, they have emphasised that the title should appropriately recognise the legendary Lavani artist whose life inspired the project. According to the family, retaining Vithabai's name would ensure that younger audiences become familiar with the performer whose contribution helped shape Maharashtra's traditional folk theatre and dance.

Despite the controversy, the film's teaser has received a largely positive response from audiences and industry observers. Shraddha Kapoor's portrayal of Vithabai Narayangaonkar has been widely appreciated, with many praising her physical transformation, traditional look and performance in the brief promotional footage. Directed by Laxman Utekar and backed by Maddock Films, the film aims to chronicle the extraordinary journey of one of Maharashtra's most celebrated Lavani artists, whose performances earned her widespread acclaim across the state.
The debate has also reignited discussions about how biographical films should balance creative freedom with historical authenticity. While filmmakers often choose symbolic or artistic titles, critics argue that films based on iconic personalities should clearly identify the individual being portrayed, particularly when the subject holds significant cultural and historical importance. Supporters of the title change believe that using Vithabai's name would better preserve her legacy and ensure she receives due recognition.
As of now, neither Laxman Utekar nor Maddock Films has publicly responded to the demand for a title change. It also remains unclear whether the filmmakers will consider renaming the project before its release. Until an official decision is announced, Eetha continues to attract attention not only for Shraddha Kapoor's much-anticipated performance but also for the growing debate over how the legendary folk artist's legacy should be represented on the big screen.
