Veteran actor Suhasini Mulay has opened up about her unconventional life choices, including her decision to marry at the age of 60, admitting that she initially feared the relationship might not succeed. The actor, known for her work across films and television, reflected on her personal journey during a recent conversation, offering insights into her outlook on love, companionship and independence.
Mulay, who spent decades focusing on her career before deciding to marry, said she had always prioritised finding a partner who matched her sense of equality and individuality. She revealed that although she met several people during her years in the film industry, she never found someone who could walk “shoulder to shoulder” with her. Her eventual marriage to Atul came after she found alignment in values, particularly his belief in equality within relationships.
Speaking about her decision to marry later in life, Mulay said she spent considerable time questioning whether she wanted to change the direction of her life at that stage. She admitted that she carefully considered the possible outcomes before making the decision, including the possibility that the relationship might not work out. Recalling her thought process, she said she had even prepared herself for a “worst-case scenario,” where the marriage might not succeed but both partners would part ways without bitterness or resentment.

According to her, this practical and non-idealised approach helped her make the decision with clarity rather than fear. The actor also shared a light-hearted recollection of her mother’s reaction to her decision to marry. While the conversation was filled with humour, it also highlighted the unexpected nature of Mulay’s life choices, which often defied conventional expectations. Her mother’s response, she said, reflected both surprise and candid humour, adding a personal and relatable dimension to her story.
Mulay’s reflections underscore her long-standing belief in independence and emotional clarity in relationships. She has often spoken about choosing self-awareness over societal pressure, and her late marriage has been widely viewed as an example of redefining traditional timelines around companionship and commitment. Now married and settled, the actor continues to emphasise the importance of equality and mutual respect in partnerships. Her journey, she noted, has been shaped by introspection rather than conformity, and she remains comfortable with the unconventional path she chose later in life.
