Soha Ali Khan has opened up about her emotional bond with mother Sharmila Tagore during the veteran actor’s battle with stage one lung cancer, revealing how the difficult phase changed the way their family communicated. Speaking during a Mother’s Day special episode of her podcast, Soha reflected on how the diagnosis encouraged them to become more expressive about their emotions and relationships within the family.
During the conversation, which featured Neetu Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, Soha shared that she and her mother were never openly expressive about their affection toward each other. She said that they rarely used phrases such as “I love you” during phone conversations or in daily life. According to Soha, Sharmila herself acknowledged this emotional distance after revealing her cancer diagnosis to the family.
Soha recalled that her mother had spoken about the importance of expressing emotions more openly after reading a book discussing emotional communication within families. The actress said Sharmila believed people from older generations often struggled to verbally communicate affection and emotional vulnerability. Soha explained that while there was always deep love and care within the family, it was rarely demonstrated openly in the way many younger families do today.

The actress further reflected on how the experience changed her own perspective on relationships and emotional expression. She noted that difficult moments often force families to become closer and more communicative, especially when facing health-related challenges. Soha also suggested that generational differences played a major role in shaping how emotions were expressed within households, particularly in traditional Indian families where affection was often shown through actions rather than words.
Apart from discussing her personal experiences, Soha Ali Khan continues to remain active in the entertainment and digital space nearly two decades after making her Bollywood debut. The actress is known for films such as Rang De Basanti, Tum Mile and Khoya Khoya Chand. In recent years, she has increasingly focused on podcasting and digital content, often discussing women’s health, parenting, lifestyle and emotional well-being through her platform “All About Her".
On the personal front, Soha is married to actor Kunal Kemmu, and the couple have a daughter, Inaaya. She is also the sister of actor Saif Ali Khan and sister-in-law of Kareena Kapoor Khan. Her latest remarks have drawn attention online for highlighting the emotional realities many families face during serious health battles and the importance of openly communicating love and support.
