Director Shakun Batra has revealed that veteran actors Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Rajat Kapoor immediately agreed to be part of his acclaimed film Kapoor & Sons, even as several other actors had turned it down during the casting process. Speaking in a recent interview, Batra reflected on the challenges he faced while assembling the cast for the 2016 family drama, which later went on to achieve both commercial success and critical acclaim.
Batra shared that while the film is now regarded as a landmark in contemporary Hindi cinema, the casting journey was far from smooth at the time. He admitted that multiple actors had rejected the project before he approached the final cast. Despite these setbacks, he said the eventual trio of Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Rajat Kapoor showed immediate interest and confidence in the script, something he now describes as “unimaginable” given the film’s later success.
The director explained that, in hindsight, the film’s success makes the casting decisions appear obvious, but the reality during production was very different. According to Batra, there was uncertainty and hesitation from many quarters, which made the quick acceptance by the veteran actors even more significant. Their willingness to take on the roles helped shape the emotional depth and authenticity that the film ultimately delivered on screen.

Reflecting on the creative risks involved, Batra said that at the time of making the film, he was not overly concerned with commercial pressures such as box office numbers or theatrical performance. Instead, his focus was on telling a heartfelt story that he personally believed in. He noted that the industry environment back then allowed filmmakers more freedom to explore such narratives without being weighed down by constant financial expectations.
Kapoor & Sons, produced under Dharma Productions, featured an ensemble cast including Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, and Alia Bhatt alongside the veteran performers. The film was widely praised for its nuanced portrayal of family dynamics and went on to become a box office hit, further cementing Batra’s reputation as a filmmaker capable of blending commercial appeal with emotional storytelling.
Looking back, Batra suggested that filmmaking today involves far more scrutiny and discussion around financial viability, release strategies, and audience reception than it did when Kapoor & Sons was made. He believes that the relative simplicity of that period allowed him to take creative risks more freely, ultimately contributing to the film’s enduring impact in the industry.
