Acclaimed filmmaker Hansal Mehta’s upcoming series Gandhi aims to deliver an epic, multi-season narrative chronicling India's independence struggle through the life of Mahatma Gandhi—offering a depth and scope comparable to Netflix's globally celebrated series The Crown.
Produced by Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment, the show stars Pratik Gandhi in the titular role and is based on Ramachandra Guha’s authoritative biographies, Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World. The series will premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September and is expected to release in India by the end of December 2025.
In an interview with PTI, Nair described Gandhi as a deeply human, richly layered series that goes beyond the well-known imagery of the Mahatma. “This isn’t just about Gandhi. It’s about the people around him—those who supported him, those who opposed him, and the entire British colonial backdrop,” he said. “These three seasons are more like our The Crown.”

The ambitious series will span three seasons covering Gandhi’s life from 1888 to 1947. The first season, titled Mohan to Mahatma, captures the lesser-known years of a young Gandhi—from his journey to London at age 18 to his early evolution before returning to India. Seasons two and three will cover the years 1915–1932 and 1932–1947 respectively.
Nair acknowledged the challenge of creating a historically grounded yet personal narrative about such a globally recognized figure. “When Richard Attenborough made Gandhi, he had only two and a half hours to tell the story. We have the opportunity to explore Gandhi’s life and the freedom movement with more depth and multiple perspectives,” he said.
Joining Pratik Gandhi in the cast is his real-life wife Bhamini Oza as Kasturba Gandhi, along with Harry Potter actor Tom Felton, who plays Josiah Oldfield, a lesser-known figure from Gandhi’s early years in London. The music is being composed by Academy Award-winner AR Rahman.
While the first season is nearing completion, shooting for the next two seasons is yet to begin. “It’s quite an expensive project. We've taken time to write it because we are dealing with monumental public figures, and it needs to be done right,” Nair said. “But at the core, it’s about human stories—how ordinary people became extraordinary.”
With Hansal Mehta’s storytelling prowess, Pratik Gandhi’s transformative performance, and a powerful creative team behind it, Gandhi is poised to become a landmark series not just for Indian audiences but for global viewers as well.
