Bollywood icon Ajay Devgn expressed his openness to starring in sequels, provided they are backed by compelling scripts, during the trailer launch of his upcoming romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2 on Tuesday. The 56-year-old actor, who has headlined three sequels this year—Raid 2, Son of Sardaar 2, and now De De Pyaar De 2, set for release on November 14—emphasised the importance of quality storytelling to justify revisiting beloved characters. Directed by Anshul Sharma and produced by T-Series and Luv Films, the film sees Devgn reprise his role as Ashish, navigating new comedic chaos in a modern take on age-gap romance.
The original De De Pyaar De (2019), directed by Akiv Ali, charmed audiences with its light-hearted exploration of 50-year-old Ashish’s relationship with 26-year-old Aisha, played by Rakul Preet Singh, and the familial tensions it sparked. The sequel flips the narrative, focusing on Aisha introducing Ashish to her family, led by her father, portrayed by R. Madhavan.
At the event, Devgn praised producer Luv Ranjan’s knack for crafting “modern, timely, and novel” stories, expressing confidence that the sequel’s fresh script would resonate with audiences. Reflecting on his own life, Devgn shared a humorous anecdote about wooing wife Kajol’s family during their courtship, advising, “Don’t be too smart or overdo it, or they’ll expect too much.”
Rakul Preet Singh, returning as the spirited Aisha, described the role as one of her favourites, noting that the sequel doubled her fun on set. “The love Aisha got in the first film was overwhelming, so reliving her was exciting,” she said, highlighting the character’s feisty charm. Madhavan, fresh off his 2024 hit Shaitaan with Devgn, embraced his debut as an on-screen father despite being nearly the same age as Devgn (55). “Competing with Ajay sir made me nervous, but his presence and dedication on set were inspiring,” he said, adding that joining the established cast alongside newcomers like Meezaan Jafri felt like entering a warm family. The ensemble also includes Jaaved Jaaferi, Gautami Kapoor, and Ishita Dutta, promising a blend of humour and heart.

The film, backed by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Luv Ranjan, and Ankur Garg, arrives at a time when Bollywood sequels face scrutiny for relying on nostalgia over innovation. Devgn’s commitment to script-driven projects counters this, aligning with his diverse 2025 slate, which also includes Azaad and Singham Again. As De De Pyaar De 2 gears up for its Diwali-adjacent release, it aims to capitalise on the original’s ₹143 crore box-office success by offering a fresh spin on modern relationships, potentially setting the tone for festive season viewership.
The trailer, unveiled amid fan anticipation, teases sharper comedy and deeper family dynamics, positioning the film as a crowd-pleaser in a competitive theatrical landscape.
