Bollywood star Akshay Kumar has reflected on his remarkable 35-year journey in the film industry, revealing that there was a time when he felt frustrated with his own career choices after spending nearly a decade playing similar action-oriented roles. The actor said he realised he had become trapped in a fixed image and decided to reinvent himself by exploring a wider range of characters and genres, a move that ultimately helped sustain one of the longest and most successful careers in Hindi cinema.
Speaking in an interview, Akshay said that when he first entered the film industry, his primary goal was simply to earn money. However, after spending years starring largely in action films, he felt the need to challenge himself creatively. The actor admitted that when he looked back at his work from that period, he felt like “slapping himself” because audiences and filmmakers had begun to see him only as an action hero. Determined to change that perception, he began taking on comedy, romance, drama and socially driven films.
The transformation proved to be a turning point in his career. Akshay went on to star in successful films such as "Hera Pheri," "Dhadkan," "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi," "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" and "Pad Man," among many others. He described his approach as constantly dismantling and rebuilding himself, comparing his career to a building that requires continuous renovation to remain relevant and strong. According to the actor, reinvention has been the key to his longevity in the industry.

Now 58, Akshay said he considers himself fortunate to have enjoyed a career spanning more than three decades. He expressed gratitude to the film industry for giving him opportunities beyond anything he had imagined. Addressing criticism over his busy schedule, the actor defended his decision to work on multiple films each year, saying he enjoys working daily and believes that more productions create employment and business opportunities across the industry.
Akshay also spoke about his personal understanding of stardom, saying that fame was never measured by awards or box office collections. Instead, he recalled the pride his late father felt whenever one of his films was released. The actor shared memories of his father repeatedly watching his movies in theatres and enthusiastically encouraging others to do the same. For him, seeing his parents take pride in his achievements represented the true meaning of success.
The actor is currently preparing for the release of "Welcome To The Jungle," the latest installment in the popular "Welcome" franchise. The film reunites him with several longtime collaborators, including Raveena Tandon, Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Jackie Shroff and Rajpal Yadav. As he continues to take on new projects, Akshay said his goal remains unchanged — to keep working, evolving and contributing to the industry that has shaped his life and career.
