Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor has revealed that he initially declined an offer to join the first season of the television reality show MasterChef India because of a unique salary condition involving Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. Kapoor shared the anecdote during a recent conversation with Culinary Culture, shedding light on negotiations that took place before the show's launch in 2010.
According to Kapoor, the producers approached him to serve as one of the judges alongside Akshay Kumar during the inaugural season. However, he insisted on a specific condition before accepting the role. Kapoor said he wanted to be paid one rupee more than Akshay Kumar, arguing that his expertise and standing in the culinary field made him indispensable to the format at the time.
Recalling the negotiations, Kapoor explained that the producers did not agree to his demand. As a result, he chose to walk away from the project rather than compromise on what he believed was a matter of professional value. He said he was comfortable with that decision and did not regret turning down the opportunity despite the popularity the show would later achieve.

Kapoor stated that his request was not about the monetary difference itself but about recognition of his contribution to the culinary industry. By then, he had already established himself as one of India's most recognised television chefs through the long-running cooking programme Khana Khazana, which helped introduce food-focused television content to millions of Indian households.
MasterChef India eventually launched with Akshay Kumar as the face of its first season and went on to become one of the country's most successful cooking reality shows. Over the years, the franchise evolved significantly and featured several renowned chefs and culinary experts as judges and mentors. Kapoor later became closely associated with the programme and played a major role in shaping its identity among Indian audiences.
The revelation has generated considerable interest among fans, offering a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes discussions that often influence major television productions.
