Delhi Capitals are set to make a major leadership announcement ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, with Indian women’s cricket star Jemimah Rodrigues expected to be named the new captain. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the official confirmation is likely to come on Tuesday, marking a significant transition for the franchise.
The Delhi-based team was previously led by Australian legend Meg Lanning during the first three seasons of the WPL. However, Lanning was released ahead of the recent mega auction, paving the way for a new captain. Co-owner Parth Jindal had earlier made it clear that the franchise was keen on appointing an Indian player as captain to lead the next phase of the team’s journey.
Jemimah Rodrigues emerged as the frontrunner for the role following her consistent performances and leadership qualities. Apart from Rodrigues, Delhi Capitals retained key players including Shafali Verma, Annabel Sutherland, Marizanne Kapp, Laura Wolvaardt, and India’s U-19 World Cup-winning captain Niki Prasad, forming a strong and balanced squad for the upcoming season.

Rodrigues has been in outstanding form on the international stage, continuing her momentum from the Women’s ODI World Cup. In the opening match of India’s five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam, she played a match-winning knock of 69 not out off 44 balls, guiding India to an emphatic eight-wicket victory.
Chasing a modest target of 122, Rodrigues anchored the innings with maturity and flair. She struck 10 boundaries and shared crucial partnerships—54 runs with Smriti Mandhana and an unbeaten 55-run stand with captain Harmanpreet Kaur—ensuring India reached the target with 32 balls to spare.
Her performance once again highlighted her composure, sharp footwork, and ability to accelerate when required. As Delhi Capitals prepare to hand her the captaincy, Rodrigues appears ready to shoulder leadership responsibilities, combining form, experience, and tactical awareness ahead of WPL 2026.
