The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu until May 12, with several districts expected to receive heavy showers over the coming days. According to weather officials, an atmospheric circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining regions is likely to trigger intense rain activity across the state.
The weather department said western districts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur and Dindigul are expected to experience heavy rainfall due to the prevailing system. These regions, particularly the hilly and ghat areas, may also witness intermittent spells of moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
In addition, southern districts including Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days. Officials have warned that thunderstorms could also occur in parts of southern Tamil Nadu during this period, increasing the risk of localized weather disruptions.

From Friday through Monday, the RMC has predicted continued heavy rainfall across multiple districts, including Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai and Theni. The system is also expected to bring widespread showers to several delta and coastal districts such as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi.
Meteorological officials have advised residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain cautious, as sustained rainfall could lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several parts of the state. Authorities have also urged the public to stay updated with official forecasts and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, Chennai and its surrounding suburbs are expected to experience cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over the next few days. The weather office noted that these conditions may bring some relief from the recent spell of heat and humidity in the city. Fishermen and coastal residents have also been advised to exercise caution and follow weather alerts issued by authorities.
