Five men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl during Navratri celebrations in 2024 in Gujarat's Bhayli area, a Vadodara special court announced on Monday. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that had drawn significant public attention following the assault, which took place amid what should have been festive celebrations in the local community.
District government pleader Anil Desai, who appeared for the prosecution in the case, confirmed the court's ruling, stating that all five convicts had been sentenced to imprisonment for the remainder of their natural lives. "The court has sentenced all five convicts to life imprisonment, which means they will remain in jail till their last breath. The court has also ordered compensation of ₹10 lakh for the victim," Desai told reporters, underscoring the severity of the sentence handed down by the special court.
The case had reached a critical juncture on August 25, when the prosecution formally sought either the death penalty or, as an alternative, life imprisonment for the five accused men, reflecting the gravity with which authorities treated the crime given the young age of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the assault. While the court ultimately opted for life imprisonment rather than capital punishment, the sentence ensures that all five convicts will spend the remainder of their lives behind bars, effectively removing any possibility of parole or early release under standard sentencing provisions.

In addition to the life sentences, the special court also imposed a collective fine of ₹1 lakh on the five convicts, levied under various applicable sections of law relevant to the case, Desai said. The compensation ordered for the victim, amounting to ₹10 lakh, reflects an effort by the court to provide some measure of financial redress to the survivor, in addition to holding the perpetrators criminally accountable through the imposition of lifelong imprisonment.
The 2024 Bhayli gang rape case had generated considerable public outrage at the time of the incident, given that the assault occurred during Navratri, a widely celebrated Hindu festival typically associated with community gatherings and public festivities across Gujarat and other parts of India. Cases involving sexual violence against minors during public events or festivals often draw heightened scrutiny and calls for swift justice, and Monday's sentencing represents a significant judicial outcome in a case that had been closely watched by both local residents and broader observers concerned with the safety of women and children during public celebrations.
