Several tourists were safely rescued on Monday after a technical fault caused the Gulmarg Gondola cable car system in Jammu and Kashmir to halt mid-air, leaving passengers stranded during their ride. The incident triggered an immediate response from rescue teams, with authorities confirming that all affected tourists were evacuated without injuries. The Jammu and Kashmir government said it was closely monitoring the situation following the disruption in one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions.
In an official update posted on X, the Chief Minister’s Office stated that it was aware of the incident and was supervising ongoing rescue operations to ensure passenger safety. Officials said the cable car service was temporarily suspended after a technical malfunction affected operations in both phases of the Gulmarg Gondola system. Despite the sudden stoppage, authorities confirmed that all cabins remained stable and secure while rescue teams reached the stranded passengers.
According to initial reports cited by PTI, hundreds of tourists were aboard the cable car system at the time of the malfunction. The incident occurred at the Gulmarg hill resort, a key destination known for its high-altitude gondola rides that attract large numbers of domestic and international visitors throughout the year. Rescue operations were carried out by personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Teams worked to evacuate passengers safely from the suspended cabins, with authorities confirming that the operation was conducted in a coordinated and controlled manner.

Officials further assured that there was no cause for panic, reiterating that the situation remained fully under control throughout the incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed when full operations of the Gulmarg Gondola will resume, as safety inspections and system checks continue at the site.
