Students at Hansraj College, a prestigious institution under Delhi University, staged protests alleging the misuse of campus facilities for the wedding of Principal Rama Sharma's son. The controversy erupted after the college grounds and other areas were reportedly decorated with tents, arches, and catering setups for the private event scheduled on February 10, 2026, prompting accusations of prioritizing personal use over student access to public institutional resources.

The protests, involving over 200 students primarily led by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) Hansraj unit, began on Monday afternoon with slogans, placards, and demonstrations on campus. Protesters claimed the sports ground was booked exclusively for the wedding, disrupting the ongoing 'Khelo Hansraj' annual sports tournament and forcing practice sessions to be shifted elsewhere. Student leaders, including SFI Secretary Asikul Islam, highlighted perceived double standards, noting that students often face restrictions on using the ground for activities like freshers' welcomes or sports after 4 pm, yet it was allegedly made available for this personal function.

Additional grievances centered on the boys' hostel, which has been closed to students for over a year due to structural concerns and declared unfit for living. Students alleged it was reopened to accommodate wedding guests, with photos circulating on social media showing floral decorations and temporary fittings in hostel areas. The invitation card for the wedding reportedly listed "Gate No. 5, Hansraj College" as the venue, fueling claims that public university property was being repurposed as a private wedding hall.

Student organizations, including both SFI and ABVP in some reports, condemned the move as an example of "moral and institutional bankruptcy," demanding an investigation into the alleged misuse, restoration of full campus access, and a ban on private events in educational spaces. The incident has sparked wider debate about transparency, equity, and the appropriate use of taxpayer-funded facilities in public educational institutions.

Delhi University officials have clarified that the principal, as a campus resident, is entitled to use allotted residential spaces for personal events, and some sources indicate the main ceremony occurred at the principal's official residence rather than broadly across the campus. Principal Rama Sharma has denied irregularities, stating no sports events were canceled and that permissions align with existing faculty privileges. Despite this, students have vowed to continue pressing for accountability if their concerns remain unaddressed, underscoring ongoing tensions between administrative decisions and student rights at one of Delhi University's prominent colleges.
