Amid growing political uncertainty following the defection of seven out of the Aam Aadmi Party’s ten Rajya Sabha members to the Bharatiya Janata Party, several AAP legislators in Punjab on Saturday claimed they received calls allegedly from intelligence personnel asking about their whereabouts. The reported outreach has intensified speculation over internal mistrust and concerns about possible further defections within the party.
According to multiple MLAs, the callers sought to confirm their locations soon after the Rajya Sabha setback, which reduced AAP’s strength in the Upper House. Some legislators, speaking anonymously, said they were surprised by the sudden enquiries but responded by assuring they remained in Punjab and had no plans to leave. Others described the situation as a sign that party leadership was closely monitoring numbers during a sensitive political moment.
This is not the first time claims have emerged about rival parties attempting to reach AAP legislators. Earlier, a senior Punjab Congress leader had publicly claimed that at least 33 AAP MLAs were in contact with him, though no formal evidence was presented. The latest developments have renewed concerns over the stability of the party’s legislative ranks in Punjab, where AAP currently holds power under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Mann, meanwhile, reportedly sought time from President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday to request the “recall” of Rajya Sabha members who crossed over to the BJP. The episode has triggered a wider political debate over defections, party loyalty, and anti-defection safeguards. As tensions continue, AAP leadership is expected to focus on consolidating support among its Punjab lawmakers ahead of any further political shifts.
