The Ministry of Railways on Wednesday rejected allegations made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding the reported death of a student inside a train at Patliputra station in Bihar, stating that the claims were false and not supported by verified facts. The ministry clarified that the individual seen in a widely circulated video did not die on board the train, as had been suggested in some reports and social media posts.
The controversy began after Rahul Gandhi shared a video on social media platform X, alleging that a student had died inside a train at Patliputra station in Patna. The post quickly gained attention online and triggered public concern, with questions raised about railway safety and passenger medical response systems. The video prompted calls for clarification from railway authorities and scrutiny over the circumstances shown in the footage.
In its official response, the Ministry of Railways said it had taken cognisance of the viral video and initiated a preliminary inquiry into the matter. However, it categorically denied that any death had occurred on the train as claimed. The ministry said the information being circulated was inaccurate and not supported by available evidence or official records.

According to the Railways, the person seen in the video appeared to be suffering from fatigue or a medical condition rather than a fatal incident. Officials suggested that the individual may have required medical attention but clarified that there was no confirmation of death onboard the train or at the station, as had been alleged in the initial claims.
The ministry issued a formal clarification on social media platform X, stating that reports and statements attributing the incident to a student death were incorrect. It urged media outlets and individuals to exercise caution while sharing unverified information, particularly when it involves sensitive incidents that could lead to public alarm or misinformation.
Railway officials further emphasised that the department is committed to passenger safety and has mechanisms in place to address medical emergencies during travel. They noted that any genuine incident involving passenger distress is thoroughly documented and investigated, and no such record supported the claim of a death in this case.
The clarification also underscored the broader issue of misinformation spreading through viral content on social media platforms. Officials warned that unverified posts can lead to confusion and unnecessary panic among the public, especially when they involve public transport systems that serve millions of passengers daily. The Railways stated that the matter would continue to be reviewed as part of its internal assessment to establish the exact circumstances behind the viral video.
Meanwhile, it reiterated its appeal for responsible communication and fact-checking before making or sharing claims related to public safety incidents. The exchange has added to ongoing political and public debate over the verification of viral content and the responsibility of public figures and institutions in ensuring accurate dissemination of information. While the Railways has firmly denied the allegation, the incident has highlighted the speed at which unverified claims can circulate and gain traction on social media platforms.
