Indian Railways is set to undertake a large-scale infrastructure upgrade in June 2026, triggering widespread service disruptions with around 77 train cancellations, alongside diversions and short-terminations across multiple zones, according to media reports. The disruption is linked to a planned “mega block” involving non-interlocking work and track expansion, most notably the commissioning and integration of a new fourth railway line at Champa station in the Bilaspur Division under the South East Central Railway (SECR).

Officials have stated that the project is essential for decongesting key routes, improving punctuality, and enabling higher operational speeds in the long term. The impact will be felt across several states, including West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha, among others. The ripple effect is expected to extend across major trunk routes, affecting both long-distance and regional connectivity during the maintenance window.

According to railway sources, a total of 77 trains will be cancelled during the block period. This includes approximately 65 express and superfast services and 12 passenger trains. In addition, around eight trains will be diverted onto alternate routes, while about six services will be short-terminated before reaching their scheduled destinations. Several other trains are also expected to experience revised timings and extended journey durations due to rerouting and operational constraints.

Among the major long-distance services impacted are several key intercity and cross-country trains, including the Tatanagar–Bilaspur Express, South Bihar Express, Ahmedabad–Howrah Express, Howrah–CSMT Express, Hatia–Pune Express, Puri–Jodhpur Express, Okha–Shalimar Express, Kamakhya–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, Gaya–LTT Express, and Udaipur–Shalimar Express. These routes connect major industrial, commercial, and pilgrimage hubs, making the disruption particularly significant for passenger movement and freight-linked travel schedules.

Railway authorities have advised passengers to check updated train status before travelling, as confirmed bookings may still be affected during the maintenance period. The Indian Railways is expected to issue periodic updates through its official channels to manage passenger expectations and provide alternative arrangements where possible.

The scale of cancellations highlights the operational complexity of undertaking simultaneous track expansion and signalling upgrades on high-density corridors. While short-term inconvenience is expected, officials maintain that the work is critical to strengthening capacity on some of the country’s busiest railway networks. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce bottlenecks on the affected routes and improve overall efficiency, particularly on freight-heavy corridors passing through central and eastern India.
