President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday flagged off the inaugural President's Bodyguard (PBG) Soldierathon at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking the launch of a first-of-its-kind event celebrating the 253-year legacy of the President's Bodyguard. The event also commemorates the 27th anniversary of India's victory in the Kargil War while paying tribute to the courage, sacrifice and service of the country's armed forces. Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retd.) was also present at the event.

According to a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Soldierathon aims to strengthen the bond between civilians and the armed forces under the theme "Run for Soldiers, Run with Soldiers." The initiative, centred on the message "Supporting Real Heroes – the Armed Forces of India," encourages citizens to express solidarity with military personnel through active participation while honouring their dedication and service to the nation.

Raised in 1773, the President's Bodyguard is the senior-most regiment of the Indian Armed Forces and is recognised as the world's only Airborne Cavalry Regiment. Its personnel undergo specialised training as both paratroopers and tankmen and, in addition to performing ceremonial duties, remain combat-ready for deployment in some of the country's most challenging operational environments, including annual postings at the Siachen Glacier.

The Soldierathon has been designed as an inclusive event, welcoming participants from all walks of life, including students, families, seasoned runners, first-time participants, educational institutions and corporate teams. Participants can compete in various categories, including 10-km, 5-km, 3-km and Cheer Buddy events, making the initiative accessible to people of different age groups and fitness levels.

According to the organisers, proceeds from the event will be used for the welfare of the troops and horses of the President's Bodyguard while helping preserve the regiment's equestrian heritage. A portion of the funds will also support the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, which provides specialised medical care and rehabilitation to soldiers with life-altering injuries. Organised in partnership with Wonder Cement and Bhutani Infra, the Soldierathon seeks to promote fitness, strengthen civil-military ties and inspire future generations by showcasing the values, discipline and legacy of the Indian Armed Forces.
