Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann laid the foundation stone for the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Government Medical College in SBS Nagar on Sunday, March 23, 2025. The Rs 300 crore project, offering 50 MBBS seats, marks the third medical college in the Doaba region within 36 months, following Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala. Attached to the District Civil Hospital, it aims to bring specialist and super-specialist care to an area lacking advanced medical facilities.
The event coincided with a state-level function in Khatkar Kalan honoring martyrs Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, hanged by the British on this day in 1931 for opposing colonial rule. Mann paid tributes, emphasizing the state’s efforts to preserve their legacy. “This medical college is a tribute to their sacrifice,” he said, noting their revolutionary act of bombing the Central Legislative Assembly in 1929 to protest British oppression.
Mann highlighted initiatives like naming Mohali airport after Bhagat Singh, a move ignored by past governments, and stressed the need to honor martyrs by naming institutions after them. He lamented unfulfilled dreams of Bhagat Singh, citing corruption and poverty, and obliquely referenced recent cash recoveries from officials’ homes without naming individuals.
The CM outlined AAP’s achievements—free power to 90% of households, 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics treating over three crore patients, and 52,000 merit-based government jobs. Mann also honored B.R. Ambedkar, pledging quality education for weaker sections, aligning with his ideology.
