President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Bucharest on Thursday for the final leg of her three-nation State Visit, marking an important step in India’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations with Eastern Europe. The visit is aimed at expanding cooperation with Romania and enhancing India’s engagement with the wider European region.
President Murmu was warmly received at the airport by Romania’s Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Toiu, according to the President’s Secretariat. The visit is part of her official tour that began with stops in Moldova and North Macedonia before reaching Romania, reflecting India’s focus on building stronger partnerships with countries in Southeast Europe.
During her stay in Romania, President Murmu is scheduled to hold discussions with Romanian President Nicusor Dan and interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. She will also meet Senate President Mircea Abrudean, Chamber of Deputies President Sorin Grindeanu and members of the Romania–India Parliamentary Friendship Group to discuss areas of mutual interest.

The President is also expected to address the India-Romania Business Forum and interact with members of the Indian community in Romania. Officials said economic cooperation, trade, investment and people-to-people connections will be key areas of focus during the visit.
The Ministry of External Affairs said Romania remains an important partner for India within the European Union and that bilateral economic ties could gain further momentum following the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement. The ministry added that President Murmu’s three-nation tour highlights India’s commitment to deepening relations with Eastern European countries.
During her earlier visit to North Macedonia, President Murmu said India views Southeast Europe as a region of growth and innovation rather than one on the sidelines of global developments. She noted that shifting geopolitical and economic trends have created new opportunities for stronger cooperation between India and countries in the region.
