Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, on Friday, marking the final leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour that also included visits to Indonesia and Australia. Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally welcomed the Indian leader at the airport. During his two-day visit, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Luxon, focusing on strengthening economic, trade, and commercial cooperation, while also engaging with the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
Ahead of his departure from New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi said the visit would build upon the strong momentum in India-New Zealand relations following Christopher Luxon's visit to India in March 2025. He noted that the three-nation tour is aimed at reinforcing India's Act East Policy, advancing the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) Vision, and promoting a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The leaders are also expected to discuss opportunities for expanding collaboration across sectors of mutual interest.
Before arriving in New Zealand, Modi concluded a three-day visit to Australia, where he held summit talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The discussions focused on deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with particular emphasis on enhancing defence and maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. A key outcome of the visit was the signing of a civil nuclear energy agreement that will facilitate the commercial supply of Australian uranium for India's civilian nuclear power programme after more than two years of negotiations.

The Prime Minister began his overseas tour in Indonesia, where India and Indonesia signed 14 agreements covering critical minerals, maritime security, trade, and several other strategic sectors. The agreements are aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation while supporting resilient regional supply chains and expanding collaboration in areas considered vital for long-term economic growth and security. The visit also reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to enhancing ties across the Indo-Pacific region.
Prime Minister Modi's three-nation visit reflects India's continued efforts to deepen strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific through stronger economic engagement, enhanced security cooperation, and closer diplomatic ties. The New Zealand visit is expected to further advance bilateral relations while expanding cooperation in trade, investment, education, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges. The meetings are also seen as part of India's broader strategy to strengthen partnerships with key regional democracies and promote stability, connectivity, and sustainable development across the Indo-Pacific.
