A video showing a heated exchange between a passenger and a railway official aboard the Howrah–New Jalpaiguri Shatabdi Express has gone viral, sparking renewed debate over maintenance standards on India’s premium train services. The incident reportedly occurred on Train No. 12041 during heavy rainfall, when water began leaking through the roof of a coach and dripping onto passenger seats. The footage quickly spread on social media, drawing strong reactions from users.
In the viral clip, an angry passenger can be seen confronting a railway staff member inside the coach, questioning the condition of the train and demanding accountability for what he described as poor maintenance. He repeatedly asked whether passengers who pay for premium tickets should be expected to travel in such conditions. The situation escalated as the passenger insisted on clear answers while pointing out the inconvenience caused to travellers.
The railway official, meanwhile, attempted to calm the situation and assured that the issue would be addressed. He was seen communicating with other staff over the phone, reportedly informing them that water was leaking inside Coach C-6 near seats 70, 71 and 72. Despite efforts to respond, the passenger continued to press for immediate accountability, reflecting growing frustration among those seated in the affected area.

The video also clearly shows rainwater dripping from the coach roof onto seats, highlighting concerns about the upkeep of one of Indian Railways’ flagship services. The Shatabdi Express is widely regarded as a premium intercity train network, and the incident has raised questions about maintenance protocols, especially during adverse weather conditions. Passengers were seen reacting to the inconvenience as water continued to seep into the compartment.
Following the circulation of the video, social media users expressed divided opinions. While many supported the passenger for bringing attention to a genuine service failure, others criticised the tone of the confrontation and defended the railway staff member, saying he appeared to be attempting to resolve the issue. The incident has reignited public discussion around passenger safety, infrastructure upkeep and accountability in high-speed rail services.
Indian Railways has not issued an official statement regarding the incident at the time of reporting. However, the viral nature of the video has once again placed focus on service quality concerns during monsoon operations, particularly on premium routes like the Shatabdi Express, where passengers expect higher standards of comfort and reliability.
