One student died and several others were seriously injured after a large tree collapsed onto a school bus in Chembur on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a major emergency response and rescue operation. The incident occurred around 2:50 PM on Road No. 11, when the bus, reportedly belonging to Universal School, was passing through the area and came under the impact of a falling tree.
According to initial reports, an old and weakened tree suddenly fell onto the moving bus, with its branches crashing onto the front and middle sections of the vehicle. The impact caused severe damage to the bus and trapped several children inside. One student was confirmed dead, while at least 10 others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Emergency teams, including local residents, police personnel, and fire brigade officials, immediately reached the spot and launched rescue operations. Authorities worked to extricate the injured children from the mangled bus, while rescue workers used cutting equipment to remove the fallen tree and access those still trapped inside. Officials said the priority was to ensure that all remaining children were safely evacuated from the wreckage.

Four injured students are currently undergoing treatment at Zen Hospital, while others have been shifted to different medical facilities across the city. Rescue operations continued for several hours as officials worked to ensure no child remained trapped inside the vehicle. One child was reportedly still stuck due to the positioning of the tree and debris, requiring careful removal efforts by rescue teams.
Local residents have alleged that repeated complaints had been made to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the need to trim or remove aging trees in the area, warning of potential hazards. They claimed that despite earlier incidents and warnings, no preventive action was taken. The incident has once again raised concerns about urban tree maintenance and public safety in Mumbai, especially amid forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
