The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions are now favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into Mumbai within the next 48 hours, raising expectations that the city may soon experience sustained rainfall after a brief delay in seasonal onset.
According to the latest forecast, the monsoon has already progressed into parts of the central Arabian Sea and several regions of Maharashtra, including Alibag and Pune, and is now moving closer to Mumbai. The IMD stated that further advancement is likely by June 24, covering Mumbai as well as additional parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.
The department also noted that the Northern Limit of Monsoon currently extends through locations such as Alibag, Pune, Nizamabad, Dantewada, Balangir, Sundargarh, Chatra, Gaya and Muzaffarpur. Weather conditions, it said, are becoming increasingly supportive of a broader monsoon spread across central and eastern India over the coming days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has forecast generally cloudy skies with spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers across the city and surrounding regions. Some districts in Maharashtra are expected to receive heavier rainfall as monsoon activity strengthens further, signalling a gradual transition into the peak rainy season.
Despite the expected arrival of rains, Mumbai’s water supply situation remains a concern. The seven lakes that supply drinking water to the city were recorded at only 8.34% combined useful storage as of June 22, significantly lower than the 26.84% level reported during the same period last year, highlighting the importance of sustained monsoon activity.
Officials noted that Mumbai typically receives the monsoon onset by mid-June, but this year’s progress had slowed due to temporary unfavourable atmospheric conditions after an earlier advance. With the latest IMD update, residents are now likely to see a steady increase in rainfall activity in the coming days, bringing relief from humid pre-monsoon conditions.
