With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday cautioned voters against what she described as the “freebie culture” and attempts by political parties to influence electoral choices through incentives and pre-election promises. She urged the electorate to remain vigilant and exercise their franchise freely, keeping public and national interest in mind.

Mayawati made the remarks while reviewing the BSP’s election preparedness at a meeting in Lucknow. She assessed progress on candidate selection, organisational strengthening and booth-level activities, while directing party leaders and workers to intensify preparations across the state. She also called for greater efforts to expand the party’s outreach ahead of the Assembly polls.

The BSP chief expressed concern over political parties attempting to sway voters, particularly women, through freebies, incentives and election-time announcements. According to her, instances of governments failing to fulfil commitments after elections have contributed to public distrust, making it important to alert voters about what she termed electoral deception. She maintained that the BSP opposed such practices and stressed the need for governments to remain focused on public welfare throughout their tenure.

Mayawati also raised issues including inflation, poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment, linking them to migration from Uttar Pradesh as people seek opportunities in other states. She argued that promises made during election campaigns often fail to provide lasting solutions to these challenges. She further pointed to growing dissatisfaction among younger generations, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, over policies they perceive as being against public interests.

The BSP leader also asked party workers to counter the strategies of rival parties and work towards bringing the BSP back to power in Uttar Pradesh. While referring to the party’s record in government, she maintained that her administration had focused on social transformation and economic empowerment without waiting for electoral considerations. The remarks come as political parties begin intensifying organisational and electoral preparations ahead of the 2027 state polls.

The meeting also covered preparations for the October 9 death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram. Mayawati directed party workers to organise the programme with dedication to the movement’s mission. The event is scheduled to be held at the Kanshi Ram Memorial complex near Buddha Smriti Upvan on Lucknow’s VIP Road, with participation expected from different parts of Uttar Pradesh, including western districts.
