A fire broke out on Thursday at a construction site within the Imam Reza Shrine complex in Mashhad, prompting a swift emergency response and raising concerns due to the site's religious and national significance. Thick smoke was seen rising over parts of the sprawling pilgrimage complex after the blaze reportedly erupted during bitumen processing work being carried out by construction workers. Firefighters responded quickly and succeeded in bringing the situation under control before the flames could spread further.
According to Iranian state media and regional news reports, emergency crews prevented the fire from reaching the shrine's main structures, including the central burial areas and the historic Goharshad Mosque. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident and that the burial site remained undamaged. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, while safety assessments of the affected construction area are continuing.
The latest incident adds to a series of fire-related events recorded at the Imam Reza Shrine complex in recent years. In 2022, a fire attributed to an electrical fault was successfully contained without causing major damage or casualties. Earlier this year, another blaze involving cleaning equipment was also brought under control, with emergency services preventing any significant impact on the shrine or its visitors.

The shrine has attracted renewed public attention following the burial of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei there on July 9 after an extended funeral process. According to the information provided, his funeral ceremonies were delayed for several months because of the conflict and included processions through Tehran, Qom, and the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala before concluding with his burial in Mashhad. Iranian officials estimated that nearly 15 million mourners participated in the ceremonies.
Authorities have emphasized that Thursday's fire was confined to the construction zone and did not affect the shrine's religious activities or key structures. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident while officials continue to monitor safety measures at the complex. The rapid response by emergency personnel helped prevent the blaze from escalating, ensuring that one of Iran's most important religious sites remained protected.
