Security forces in Manipur have successfully eradicated poppy plantations spanning over 470 acres across two hill districts through coordinated joint operations conducted over recent days. These actions represent a significant strike against illicit narcotics cultivation, aimed at disrupting networks that sustain insurgency and undermine regional stability.
In Kangpokpi district, a combined team comprising police, Assam Rifles, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) targeted approximately 20 acres of poppy fields at Loibol Khullen village under New Keithelmanbi police station on Saturday. Authorities seized two sacks of salt packets from the site, while destroying spray pumps, pipes, herbicides, and other cultivation equipment through controlled burning.
The defence ministry issued a statement indicating that the operation was initiated based on specific intelligence inputs concerning unauthorized poppy farming. Executed amid difficult terrain and inclement weather, the initiative underscores the persistent commitment of Assam Rifles to eliminate illegal drug production and sever financial lifelines supporting anti-national elements.

On the same day in Kangpokpi, another joint operation involving police, CRPF, and forest officials demolished poppy plantations covering about 20 acres in the Kotlen hill ranges. Five huts were incinerated, along with three bags of fertilizer, two containers of roundup herbicides, and two bags of salt, further dismantling the infrastructure supporting these illegal activities.
Extensive destruction efforts extended to Ukhrul district, where security forces, in partnership with government agencies, targeted hill ranges including Somdal, Lamlai Chingfei, and Litan from November 11 to 15. Approximately 436 acres of poppy plantations were obliterated, with 51 huts discovered at the locations also reduced to ashes, as confirmed by police reports.
